International Health Insurance
International health insurance or international medical insurance, as it is also called, is coverage that is used when you leave your home country for more than a year (otherwise you would just get travel health insurance for short trips). If you are a US citizen, then you can only get this coverage IF you live outside the US for more than six months out of the year. And, you need to be leaving the US within 30 days to apply for the coverage. It is also best to be living overseas at the time of renewal (on the anniversary of the policy). Foreign nationals coming to the US should apply for coverage before they leave their home country or current country of residence. It is more difficult to buy this coverage one you have arrived in the US. International health insurance usually covers expenses not related to pre-existing conditions from unexpected illness or injury including:
- Hospital, doctor and prescription charges
- Emergency medical evacuation
- Emergency reunion
- Common carrier accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D)
- Return of mortal remains
Below you will find three different companies that offer this coverage. There is a formal underwriting process that goes along with these policies, so you can be denied coverage with pre-existing conditions. And, the Affordable Care Act does not have jurisdiction over these types of policies, so you can be declined even after the act goes into full effect in 2014.
